Abita Satsuma Harvest Wit

Interesting that they don't mention that this has a fair amount of lees in the bottle. Par for the style, sure, but I can imagine some redneck freaking out over "gunk" floating around in the beer.

Until now, I didn't know that a Satsuma was a type of seedless orange. As an amateur naval historian, the only Satsuma I knew of was the Japanese battleship that was involved in the 1920 Siberian Intervention.

But anyway, this really doesn't have any tangible orange or orange-like aspects to it. Not enough to notice, that is -- and certainly nothing along the lines of "Orange juice. Do it"...! Rather, this is just a very nice White Beer, perfect for my last day in insanely humid Jacksonville FL. Some spice in the mix, of course, but thankfully not too over-the-top with the coriander. This even has the big billowy head of white foam.

Overall, pretty impressive for an outfit who's Belgian-ish offerings in the past curdled my stomach!

Recommended.

Brewer's Description:

Real Louisiana Satsumas, golden wheat, oats and the finest barley create Abita Satsuma Harvest Wit. Pale and cloudy, like the haze on a hot summer day, this white beer has a sweet and subtle citrus flavor with a touch of spice that is cool and refreshing. Abita Satsuma Harvest Wit is very versatile and can compliment a number of dishes. This brew pairs well with salads, fish, shrimp and lobster, as long as the dishes are not too spicy. Thai dishes, which often have citric notes in their flavor profile, would also perfectly compliment the orange flavors in Abita Satsuma Harvest Wit.
