Ayinger Jahrhundert Bier

I first learned about drinking Real Beer (i.e. non-Macro) at a hole-in-the-wall place called The Horse You Came In On Saloon, in Fell's Point, Baltimore, with a Newcastle Brown, and a Ayinger Brau Weiss. The rest, as the expression goes, is history.

But what may not be so obvious, and something I didn't even think about until recently, is the fact that I haven't really explored any of the other Aiynger beers. So after a trip to a Deli/beer-store that specializes in any and all German biers, I made it a point to grab as many different varieties of Ayinger as I could. And after getting my first taste of this one, I'm glad I did!

Doesn't look really all that impressive, to be honest. Nice pilsener aroma -- grainy, with hints of hops, and nothing else. No off-aromas to speak of.

Same goes for the flavor profile. Crisp and grainy, with enough bitterness to actually notice (a rarity IMO, even for so-called authentic Pilseners).

Very refreshing and clean finish in the mouthfeel, making this entirely too easy to drink. I was half-way through the glass before I knew it!

I bit rare and pricey for day-to-day drinking. But if this were available draught at a sports bar, I could see even BudMillerCoors fans getting won over to this beer. Recommended.

Brewer's Description:

This beer was first brewed in 1978 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our brewery. It has a golden-yellow color with a slightly flowery yeast, honey-ish aroma, tastes a little spicy and is full-bodied in initial taste, mild before swallowing and soft with a refined sparkle and fades with a well-balanced hint of bitterness. It is an especially drinkable and harmonious beer. Conrad Seidl, known as the Austrian “Pope of Beers”, on the Jahrhundert-Bier: “It is a malty beer that pronounces the precious earthy quality of malted barley.”
