Cantillon Bruocsella (1900) Grand Cru
In a word, "Disappointing".
Yes, I know it's not supposed to have much in the way of carbonation. And yes, I am fully aware of the fact that this is not intended to be brutally sour/tart (ala "nut-check"). But is it too much to ask that this beer be interesting to drink?
This was a 2003 vintage, so I didn't expect much in the way of truly arcane Lambic-centric quirks to show up. That is to say, I didn't plan on much in the way of the classic wet horse-blanket/moldy cellar/ damp attic character to be prevalent in this beer.
But when it comes right down to it, there does need to be *some sort* of liveliness to this beer, yes? And that's where my biggest complaint stems from. Without much in the way of the classic "Lambic-ness" in this beer, what else does it have to go on? Not much, seemingly.
I was quickly bored of this beer, to be honest. No wonder Belgian brewmasters came up with the idea to age and blend various types and vintages of Lambic -- since seemingly the most bare-bones example of the style really isn't anything to get excited about, IMO.
