Dos Equis Amber Lager

Hmm..., two Mexican beer reviews in three days. What the heck is going on here? Well, like so many of my beer geek brothers and sisters, I feel almost obligated to keep future beer reviews in mind whenever I happen to be out on-the-town. As such, when I took the girlfriend out for a nice Mexican seafood meal tonight, I made sure to order a beer that I had not as yet reviewed. So the "Two X's Amber" off the tap became the lucky winner, so to speak...!

I seem to remember this being a bit darker. In fact, the Amber really isn't much more darker than the standard Dos Equis, seemingly. I almost sent the beer back, until I saw the straw-like quality of the Dos Equis ordered by the folks at the next table. So, like it or not, this unattractive "amber" beer is what you're stuck with, amigo.

Minimal aroma, with little improvment as the beer warmed up. Perhaps the Rockin' Lobster resturant has inferior glassware or something to preclude head retention (and coincidentally, aroma production), but I doubt it. Hey, when it comes to giving a beer the benefit of the doubt, I often go all out!

But one thing that I can't compromise is in the flavor, which for this beer doesn't do a whole lot for me. Matches well with carne asada's and such, but doesn't have enough legs to stand on it's own. Very basic when sampled in anything but a Mexican food context.

Not horrible, but nothing to go "loco" for. Still have to put Negro Modello as one of my favorite Mexican beers, with Dos Equis Amber somewhere in the middle of the pact.
