Hennepin Farmhouse Saison

I've been a fan of the entire Ommegang line for several years now, and have in fact been aging some of their beers for quite a while. Tonight I popped open a Hennepin that I had been aging for the past 18 months or so. While it's very hard to compare a beer (that's worth aging) when it's fresh and when it's been well-cellared for 6-24 months, I think I know this beer well enough to review it, fresh or not-so-fresh.

One thing that has always stuck out to me each and every time I drink a beer from Ommegang is the fact that each beer tastes fresh and "alive". In other words, even with the sample sitting next to my computer (approximately 18 months old), each and every Ommegang beer that I have had has always tasted clean and enjoyable. Whether this technically fits into one of the overly-strict style guidelines for Belgian beers is one thing (i.e. "is this a Duvel-wannabe, or more of a Tripel?"), but I like to think that this enjoyable enough to transcend such strict boundaries.

I think I will throw my aged Rare Vos into the `fridge, just so that I can have a fuller range of Ommegang beer reviews to my credit....! ;)

Brewer's Description:

As you pour this rich golden ale into your glass, consider your surroundings. Are you in a restaurant? Outside on the deck? Is it hot and humid? Cold and brisk? Take a drink. Feel the way Hennepin is bright and lively in your mouth with a warming mix of spicy gingersnap and citrusy hops. Refreshing. Relaxing. It's true: no matter where you are, Hennepin is the perfect ale for all seasons.
