Iron City Beer
Yeah, I know this seems like an odd choice for me, beer-wise. But seeing as how I've had nothing nothing but big bruising ales as of late, I've been wanting something to reset my taste buds back to a good starting position. What better way than a harmless Yank lager, eh? And seeing as how I've never had this before (yes, really), I figured it'd worth dropping a buck or so on.
This works for what it's intended for, but I wouldn't put it in in my top ten favorite American Lagers List or anything.
As is so often the case, this was fine when it was ice cold straight out of the fridge. Even something interesting going on in the malt bill.
But this is also a case where you can't dilly-dally around for too long. Once this beer starts to get warmer (yet still cold, but ale standards), it starts to fall apart. The backend has a weird hook, the after-taste picks up some mustiness, and there is a certain "back-of-the-skull headache precursor"-thing going on, too.
Probably fine if you can find it fresh, cheap, and *cold* -- before/during/after a Penguins/Steelers/Pirates/Panthers game. But it's really not a very good beer.
