New Belgium Abbey Belgian Style Ale

Maybe it was because I had two other Belgian-style beers from New Belgium in the past few days that were drastically unsatisfying, that I didn't have many expectations for this third and last New Belgium beer in my fridge. But after pouring this into my Augustijn glass, complete with a nice Dubbel-ish appearence, that things finally started to turn around a bit. Not earth-shattering, as far Abbey ales go, but so much better than the musty and uninspiring Frambozen and Tripel, IMO.

Along with the aforementioned respectable appearence, and this muted but not-unappealing aroma, this beer only really impresses where it counts most -- the flavor profile. Classic heavy-and-sweet, but in an appealing Belgian-ish way, not like a Dopplebock or anything. Definitely made with a certian amount of Belgian Candi Sugar, me'thinks, and/or less esoteric, good ol' fashioned brown sugar. Either way, it's this beer's mouthfeel and taste that impress me though, making this nicely drinkable.

One of the best Dubbels I've had from this side of the Atlantic -- which again, amazes me, since this breweries other offerings did very little for me. But I have few reservations recommending this one.
