St. Austell Tribute Premium Cornish Ale

First sampled at The White Hart Hotel, St Austell, Cornwall (and then quite often all over Central Cornwall).

Touted to be one of the truly great Authentic Real Ales of Cornwall, one of the very few times I find myself agreeing with the hype-machine. Like any other Real Ale, it all depends on how this has been handled by the cellarman and landlord of an establishment. But seeing as how I didn't run across a single off-pint of this offering speaks highly of both the pubs, and of the beer itself, IMO.

Very crisp and "bright", with Goldings obviously in full-force from the very beginning to the very end. Easy in it's drinkability and balance, but with enough things going on in the malt-bill and mouthfeel (esp. the middle) to make the journey worth your while.

This is also one of the very few beers bottled by the brewery, and I'm curious to see how this holds up after a long-distance, trans-Atlantic journey to the Western U.S. But even if it's not quite up to it's cask-conditioned relative (and, to be honest, that's really an unfair comparison), I'm sure it'll be satisfying just the same.

Recommended.

Brewer's Description:

A Supreme Champion Ale of Cornwall as voted by CAMRA*, and the South West's Favourite cask beer**, Tribute is a popular favourite with locals and visitors to Cornwall, as well as being a much sought after guest ale throughout the rest of the UK. It is brewed using specially grown Cornish Gold Malt. For foodies, Tribute is a perfect accompaniment to chicken, gammon or fish. The ideal alternative to a fine white wine. Roger Protz, Editor Good Beer Guide, wrote: "Tribute is a magnificent example of a bronze coloured English bitter, with a rich aroma of biscuity malt and tart citrus fruit from the Willamette hops. Juicy malt, hop resins and tangy fruit coat the tongue, while the finish is long and lingering, with a fine balance between malt, hops and fruit, finally becoming dry and bitter."
