Weltenburger Asam Bock

Weltenburger's beers used to get quite a bit of play in my `fridge a few years back, when I found a place that were selling them cheap, and fresh seemingly straight from Deutschland. That source dried up years ago, and I've had some really bad examples from this brewery since then. I suspect many other folks have too, considering the rather iffy reputation the brewery has with many folks.

But I grabbed this from a reputable source (Holiday Wine Source in Escondido, CA -- the best beer-store in San Diego CA IMO), so thought I'd revisit this brewery with a style that I've only recently warmed up to.

All of the classic Doppelbock elements are in play here. Warm and filling malt bill, that brings a semi-sweet (but not sickly-sweet) aspect to this beer. Somewhat dry in the front, that helps the overall balance of the beer somewhat, but doesn't get in the way of the modus operandi of the beer -- the big malt profile.

Could this perhaps be more complex, along the lines of the classic Celebrator, or the under-rated Korbinian? Probably. But for what this is, it did a good job while I watched the MLB All-Star Game. (AL 5, NL 4, 9th Inning, 2 outs)

A solid go-to Doppelbock.
